Character Series: Shoujo Kakumei Utena (or Revolutionary Girl Utena)
Age: 17
Background: (Lots of spoilers for the whole series!) Utena Tenjou’s parents died when she was a little girl, which you can imagine will cause a person to deal with serious trauma issues. To make things worse, she got mixed up (unknowingly) in the middle of Akio and Anthy Himemiya’s disorderly family problems. (I’ll cover that in a minute)

After her parents died, Utena decided that she would like to die, too, so she crept into a coffin and waited there to go with her family. A “prince” (a.k.a. a pimp named Akio) came to her and showed her something “eternal,” which was the pain and suffering which was being eternally felt by his sister, Anthy. She had no control or release from this grip of ongoing suffering. Utena vowed that one day she would grow up to be valiant and save this suffering witch from her turmoil. Akio gave Utena a ring so that she could find them someday when she was old enough to save her. Later on, Utena forgot all of this about pain and suffering, and sugar coated her whole past. She led herself to believe that after her parents had died she had met a valiant prince, and was so impressed by him that she had decided to be like him someday.

Eventually, the ring that she had been given led her to Ohtori Academy, which bears the same rose crest as is on the ring. Utena accidentally got mixed up in a sword fighting duel to defend her friend Wakaba’s feelings, and found that the man she was dueling (Saionji) also had a rose crest ring. She then found out that the rose crest ring made her part of a secret club of people who dueled in order to gain the Rose Bride (whose name is Anthy. Dun dun dunnn!) Utena won Anthy in the duel against Saionji. Utena thinks that dueling for Anthy like she is a possession is very wrong, and says this often. She wants to be friends with Anthy rather than just own her.

After a while, Utena started to have to keep dueling the student council members and won one after another. Touga beat her and gained Anthy, and then Utena gained her back.
Anyway

After she fought the student council, Utena then had to fight Black Rose Duelists, who were led by a man named Mikage, whose ultimate goal was to win the duels, kill Anthy, and use the powers that be to save a boy named Mamiya from death due to illness. Utena had to save Anthy, her best friend, so she fought and won against the black duelists, thankfully. Through all of this, Utena is slowly understanding a little more about her situation, but not really.

Utena remains pretty innocent throughout this part of her life, until corruption tries to twist her little self. (Akio=Corruption) I don’t really want to go into it, but the whole “deranged Himemiya family” thing is about incest, and betrayal and what not.

So… what it all leads up to is Utena finding out all about Akio and his ultimate plans to use Utena to gain this ultimate power, but Utena wishes to simply save Anthy. In the end, Anthy stabs Utena in the back because she realizes that things must go on as they have been. OKAY, HERE IS THE PART WHERE UTENA IS PULLED FROM HER CANON-You see, Utena finally frees Anthy from the pain of being stabbed with a thousand swords, but then the last image we see of Utena is the swords flying at her own body. Well, at that exact moment (right before they kill Utena) she’s ripped out of that world and plunged into this.. entirely confused state in this Memento Eden.

Personality: Utena is valiant, and will stand up very strong for her beliefs. She is also a little bit (okay, a LOT) naïve, but that is only because it is essential to her own undying courage and belief in human good to be naïve, because let’s face it… if she really knew everything that was going on around her, she would probably go crazy.
For lack of a better term, Utena is basically the ultimate feminist. She spent the entire time in her canon show standing up for the rights of her best friend, Anthy, through… everything. She never gave up, so what makes you think that she’ll stop doing this now? She won’t! She will always be strong willed, and also a bit of a tomboy. (Its sort of built into her)

Since she spent her life trying to become a prince, her subconscious will always force her to act in this boyish way, but she also has feminine charm. ^ ^ (She’s shmexy)

Utena also does really random things…. Like that one time when Anthy was naked, so Utena ripped a tablecloth off of a nearby table and made a touga out of it. Honestly, who would think to do that?
Utena’s main thing is that she puts others before herself. She is very, very caring. (and like I said before, one of her only flaws is that she is… very naïve. But sometimes that can be amusing.)

Don’t mess with her, guys.
